New Delhi: Home Minister P. Chidambaram Thursday said the report of the Liberhan Commission on the demolition of the Babri masjid in Ayodhya would not be buried but would be tabled in parliament.
“I have gone through the four volumes of Liberhan Commission report. This will not be buried. It will be placed before the house earlier then the statutory period,” he said in the Lok Sabha.
On tackling Maoism, he said: “We may have underestimated the potential threat posed by Maoism. They (Maoists) have categorically stated that there were engaging in a caste struggle.”
Taking a dig at the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) led government in West Bengal, Chidambaram said for long it thought that the Maoists and the party were fighting for the same cause. “So, the West Bengal government did not take any action.
“You paid the price at Lalgarh. A police station was taken over by the Maoists. The state government could not retake the police station for days. The police station was regained only after the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was sent,” Chidambaram said while gesturing at the CPI-M members.
“The CPI-Maoists has the structure of a political party and they have a central military commission. They have control over vast tracks of land in different states. A number of the states have been ruled by the Congress for last 10 years. The challenge posed by the Maoists should be tackled squarely. Police action and development in the Maoist- controlled areas should be carried out together,” the minister maintained.
Chidambaram said militancy has come down in Jammu and Kashmir but agitation-based politics was on the rise in the state.
Referring to Shopian case, he said in Kashmir, even minor incidents are leading to major agitations. He also said there was no question of withdrawing troops from the state.
Referring to the ceasefire offered by a insurgent group in Assam’s North Cachar district, he asked: “How can an insurgent group offer a ceasefire to a sovereign government. They must lay down arms.”
