“The Congress is confident (that) when the prime minister speaks in parliament July 29, he will set at rest all the questions, all apprehensions and speculation relating to the Indo-Pak joint statement at Sharm-el-Sheikh in Egypt,” Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said here.

The joint statement seeks to delink the issue of terrorism from the composite dialogue process between India and Pakistan.

The prime minister is to make a speak in parliament about the statement following criticism by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that he had capitulated to Pakistan.

There have also been misgivings over it among a section of Congress leaders.

Besides, some Congress members are upset that Pakistan’s Balochistan province has been included in the statement as an issue of concern to Islamabad.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi had told colleagues Friday that the party should stand united behind the prime minister and said she endorsed the new diplomatic initiative by Manmohan Singh.
