New Delhi : Congress leader Girija Vyas said Friday that the people rejected the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Lok Sabha election because some of its leaders made hate speeches during the campaign.
Vyas, who initiated discussion in the Lok Sabha on the motion of thanks to the president, said: “One young member in the house used objectionable words against a particular community during the election campaign. This was one of the reasons the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government got re-elected.
“The people have rejected the ideology of hate speeches and misuse of religion,” Vyas said, without naming BJP MP Varun Gandhi who was accused of making communal speeches in Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh.
Vyas said the Congress party’s ideals are “secularism, development and all-inclusive growth”.
“The election results shows that the country needs development based on unity and integrity. There is a trust… there is a confidence… that we (will) protect secularism and security.”
Congress leader from Kerala P.C. Chacko seconded the motion of thanks moved by Vyas.
“The previous Manmohan Singh government was the best in its performance. During the so called India Shining campaign by the BJP government, the country’s growth rate was only 5.8 percent. But the UPA government managed to maintain nine percent growth rate,” he said.
Launching a strong attack against the Left Front government in West Bengal, Chacko said the state government failed to provide relief to the victims of cyclone Aila.
“At least provide drinking water to the people affected by Aila,” Chacko told the Left party members who urged the government to declare Aila as a national calamity.
