Thiruvananthapuram : A day after Kerala Governor R.S. Gavai gave his nod to the prosecution of Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, security of the former has been stepped up following a threat call Sunday evening.
Security was increased after an anonymous caller from Saudi Arabia threatened Gavai that he would be killed. “The call came at 7.11 p.m. last (Sunday) evening which said that he would be killed,” Police Commissioner of Thiruvananthapuram M.R. Ajith Kumar told IANS Monday.
“I don’t think it is serious but nevertheless we are leaving nothing to chance and a case has been registered and investigations have begun,” he said.
“The last incident of a fake call came to the chief minister some time back. It was traced to a coin booth in Saudi Arabia. We are investigating into the call that came last (Sunday) evening with all seriousness,” Kumar added.
The threat call is being directly linked to Gavai’s nod to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for prosecuting Pinarayi Vijayan in the Rs.374 crore (Rs.3.74 billion) SNC Lavalin corruption case. Gavai gave his nod after he called the head of the CBI office here to his residence Sunday afternoon.
The youth and student wings of CPI-M staged a protest march to Raj Bhavan, official residence of Gavai, Sunday evening.
