New Delhi: The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has accused Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders of misusing their central ministerial positions to “unleash politics of terror” in West Bengal.

Reacting to the assault by TMC activists on CPI-M supporters in Nandigram and Khejuri in West Bengal, an editorial in party mouthpiece People’s Democracy states: “The supreme anti-democratic character of the TMC is fast unfolding, accompanied by murderous assaults on the CPI-M and the Left parties in West Bengal.”

“The TMC is seeking to misuse ministerial power to unleash its politics of terror and not to discharge responsibility in the service of the people of the country,” it said in the June 10 issue.

The party said that Trinamool Congress parliamentarians in Nandigram and Khejuri had unleashed sustained attacks on communist activists ever since the Lok Sabha election results were out.

The editorial, headlined ‘Politics of Terror’, dubbed TMC chief Mamata Banerjee’s demand to impose article 355 in the state, by which the centre can intervene and protect a state against external aggression or internal disturbance, as “the pot calling the kettle black.”

The editorial said this was a classic case of first mounting “murderous assaults” and then “raising the bogey of a law and order breakdown and seek central intervention”.

The CPI-M has said that the terror created by TMC was the same as “semi-fascist terror unleashed by Congress and other reactionary forces” in the 1970s in which, it said, the party had lost thousands of its comrades.

The People’s Democracy has also accused the Trinamool Congress of creating hindrance in providing relief to the West Bengal government after the state was hit by Aila cyclone.

“When tragedy struck Bengal in the form of cyclone Aila, the Trinamool chief asked the central government not to provide any humanitarian assistance to the state government…. such an attitude is simply inhuman,” the editorial said.
