Employee injured in failed Chandigarh bank robbery

Chandigarh : An attempt to rob a nationalized bank here Wednesday failed after three robbers held the bank staff hostage for over an hour before fleeing without any cash but seriously injuring an employee, said the police.

According to the police, three well-built men in their late twenties entered the premises of the Bank of Maharashtra here in phase 11. They overpowered the security guard and peon of the bank and tied their hands and feet.

“They were speaking in Punjabi and were carrying guns. They were carrying a big bag with them and were demanding the locker keys from us,” Baldev Singh, a bank employee told IANS.

He added: “One of our female employees started shouting for help which created confusion among the robbers. They shot at her before running away from the bank. The bullet did not hit her directly but scratched her close to her ear. She was taken to hospital in a profusely bleeding condition.”

The injured woman was admitted to a government hospital in Sector 32 here. Her condition is serious, said doctors.

Jatinder Singh Aulakh, district police chief, told IANS: “We have alerted all our police check-posts. They were using a fake registration number on the Safari car in which they came and fled.”

“Forensic experts have been called to gather clues from the spot,” said Aulakh.
