Groom demands dowry, gets garland of shoes instead

By IANS,

Lucknow : Just as the marriage ceremony was about to begin, a groom in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur district made a dowry demand. What he got instead was a garland of shoes and a dog collar from the bride’s outraged family. They blackened his face and paraded him around the village.

“The incident took place Thursday night in Bhojpur village in Saharanpur district, where Zakir, 25, had to face the wrath of the girl’s family and her relatives,” police inspector Manvendra Singh told IANS over phone.

Just before the marriage was about to start, Zakir demanded Rs.50,000 cash from the girl’s family and said he would accept the girl only after his demand was met, police said.

“Even after repeated pleas by the girl’s family members, Zakir remained adamant on his demand. Enraged over the dowry demand, the girl’s brothers and other relatives forcibly made Zakir wear a garland of shoes along with a dog collar,” Singh said.

Venting their ire, the girl’s family members later brought Zakir outside of the marriage hall and blackened his face. Zakir was then paraded in the village, according to police.

“On getting information about the incident from some locals, we rushed to the spot and controlled the situation,” Singh said.

While a case for demanding dowry has been slapped against Zakir, three family members of the girl have also been detained for manhandling the groom, he added.

Saharanpur is some 350 km from Lucknow.
