New Delhi : As many as 53,195 people were fined in the national capital for traffic offences during a week-long road safety drive, Delhi Police Commissioner Y.S. Dadwal said Friday.
Of these, the maximum – 10,625 people – were penalised for jumping red lights followed by 4,659 for dangerous driving between June 1 and June 7.
As many as 2,739 people were booked for violating speed limits, followed by 1,550 fined for stop-line violations and 353 for jay-walking.
“We had also launched the safe pedestrian drive from June 1 to June 15 and and it is encouraging to note that in this period, there was 25 percent fall in fatal accidents and 18 percent fall in simple accidents,” Dadwal said at a fortnightly review meeting here.
According to the police commissioner, police monitored 589 traffic intersections and 516 other points having zebra crossings for movement of pedestrians and motorists. They also took strict actions against jay-walkers and tried to educate them.
During the fortnight, 59 road accident deaths were reported compared to 78 in the period May 16-31. The capital also recorded a drop of 18 percent in non-fatal accidents.
“Among the total accidental deaths reported in the capital, 51 percent of them are pedestrians. We will continue to launch such drives to educate pedestrians and motorists about road safety and this is the only way to address the issue of accidental deaths,” Dadwal said
