Increase in scholarships for minority students of Ph.D., M.Phil. demanded

New Delhi: An association of research scholars at central universities has demanded the central government to increase the number of and widen the cap of scholarships recently announced for Ph.D. and M.Phil students of minority communities.

Central Universities’ Research Scholars’ Association (CURSA) has sent a memorandum to union Minister of Minority Affairs Salman Khursheed and urged him to extend the benefit to students of Arts Faculty also. CURSA has also demanded that the number of scholarships to minority students of Ph.D. and M.Phil should be increased to 3000.

UGC chairman Prof. Sukhdeo Thorat on behalf of your ministry has announced the National Scholarship for Ph. D and M.Phil students belonging to minority communities.

“The said Scholarship has covered only few faculties like Social Sciences, Commerce, Science and Life Sciences. It has left Arts Faculty wherein majority of Muslims students may be found under which some languages like Urdu, Arabic and Persian falls. National Scholarship must cover all faculties,” reads the memorandum.

The government has announced only 252 scholarships. The group has demanded that 3000 minority students should be covered under the scheme each year.

A copy of the memorandum has also been sent to Kapil Sibal, Ministry of Human Recourses Development and Chairman, University Grant commission.
