Kolkata : Contradicting Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s statement that his government would give “serious thought” to banning the Communist Party of India-Maoist, the ruling Left Front in West Bengal Monday said it was against a ban and the rebel outfit has to be fought politically.
“We have discussed this matter even in the past and decided that this outfit which propagates a wrong political line cannot be countered through a ban,” Left Front chairman Biman Bose said in a media statement.
“Isolating the CPI-Maoist and its dangerous political line from the masses is a continuous political process. We have to continue it,” the statement said.
Bose said the Left parties have been fighting the “wrong politics” of the Maoists politically. “And because we are opposing the terrorist activities of the CPI-Maoist, we are becoming victims of their atrocities,” he claimed.
Bose also laid stress on administrative measures to continue the normal life of the public.
Last week, union Home Minister P. Chidambaram rapped the state government for not banning the outfit, which has declared the state’s Lalgarh area in West Midnapore a “liberated zone”.
“No one can understand why the Communist Party of India-Maoist has not been banned (by West Bengal),” Chidambaram said after a meeting with Chief Minister Bhattacharjee.
The chief minister had later said his government will give the matter a “serious thought”.
