New Delhi : More and more educated people are getting into the Indian parliament. In the 543-seat 14th Lok Sabha, there were 157 postgraduates and 22 doctorate MPs, according to the latest figures issued here.
“The 14th Lok Sabha had 157 postgraduate members which was the highest figure in all the Lok Sabha,” said the Press Information Bureau (PIB) reference handbook, which was released Monday after the Election Commission announced the five-phase poll schedule to pick the 15th Lok Sabha.
Also, there were 249 graduates in the current Lok Sabha whose last session ended Feb 26.
Although, there were 22 doctorates this time, in the 11th Lok Sabha the figure was 29.
Giving the educational background of the members from the first to the current Lok Sabha, the handbook states that in the first Lok Sabha there were 112 under-marticulates, 88 undergraduates, 177 graduates, 85 postgraduates and 15 doctorates.
But in the 14th Lok Sabha, the situation was totally different as many more educated people were elected to the Indian parliament.
In 2004, 19 under-marticulates, 96 undergraduate, 249 graduates, 157 postgraduates and 22 doctorates were elected to the 14th Lok Sabha.
The educational background of the members improved subsequently from the first Lok Sabha of 1952.
If in the first Lok Sabha, there were 112 under-matriculates, it went up to 120 in the second Lok Sabha and 141 in the third Lok Sabha.
In the fourth Lok Sabha, the figure was 54. But it again went up to 119 in the fifth Lok Sabha.
However, the number of under-matriculates continued to somewhat dip from the sixth Lok Sabha onwards when it was 52. It was then 53 in seventh, 42 in eighth, 10 in ninth, 18 in 10th, 15 in 11th, 12 in 12th and 15 in the 13th Lok Sabha.
The number of graduates also saw an increase.
From 177 graduates in the first Lok Sabha, it went up to 220 in the 10th Lok Sabha and then 256 in the 13th Lok Sabha.
Similarly, the number of postgraduates went up from 85 in the first Lok Sabha to 145 in the 13th Lok Sabha.
