London : The International Cricket Council (ICC) says the Sri Lankan board had been made fully aware of the risks facing their players in Pakistan ahead of their tour that was abruptly called off Tuesday in the wake of the Lahore terror attack.
ICC chief executive Haroon Logat told reporters here the council had been told by its consultants that the security environment in Pakistan had worsened since the exit of Pervez Musharraf as the country’s president.
“Our security consultants were more confident in the previous (Musharraf) regime,” Logat said.
He said this advice was the main reason why the ICC decided in January to move the Champions Trophy out of Pakistan.
The ICC remarks came after a terrorist attack left eight people dead Tuesday when a dozen men attacked the Sri Lankan cricket team bus with rifles, grenades and rocket launchers as it travelled to Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore for the third day of the second Test against Pakistan. Six members of the Sri Lanka’s touring party and an official were injured.
