New Delhi : A suspected member of the Indian Mujahideen (IM) media cell, accused of translating e-mail drafts sent to media houses after the serial bombings in several cities last year, was sent to eight-day police custody here Wednesday.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja sent Asif Bashir Sheikh to police custody till 12 March.
Delhi Police told the court that Sheikh translated the emails from Urdu into English, which were forwarded to the media houses by his accomplice Mohammed Asghar Mansoor Peerbhoy. These mails claimed responsibility for the serial bombings in Ahmedabad and Delhi.
The accused, a BE in mechanical engineering, was brought to the city court from Aurangabad in Maharashtra on a transit remand by Delhi Police.
The accused, who was working in a private firm, came into contact with Riyaz and Iqbal Bhatkal in Pune while he was learning Urdu.
The Bhatkal brothers allegedly motivated Sheikh to join the Indian Mujahideen, and was wanted for the Sep 13 serial blasts here for helping them.
The police alleged Sheikh, arrested from Pune on Sep 28 last year, later instigated Peerbhoy to join the Indian Mujahideen.
