Chandigarh : Lawyers of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Thursday rejected a proposal of the high court bar association to end the boycott of a senior judge’s court.
The bar association’s move to resolve an ongoing stalemate between the protesting lawyers and Justice Uma Nath Singh, whose court is being boycotted by them since Feb 19 after he passed certain remarks against lawyers, was rejected at a meeting of the high court lawyers here Thursday.
The protesting lawyers are seeking Justice Singh’s transfer from this high court. This is the second time in two years that lawyers have boycotted his court.
The executive committee of bar association put up a proposal of ending the boycott of the judge and leaving the issue of his transfer on Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan.
Bar Association president Rupinder S. Khosla said: “The bar association will send its representatives to meet the Chief Justice of India to apprise him about the situation. Lawyers would continue the boycott of Justice Uma Nath Singh and pursue their demand seeking his transfer from here.”
Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Tirath Singh Thakur Wednesday constituted a five-judge committee to look into the matter.
Justice Singh was last year also involved in a similar exchange with lawyers after he ordered that a lawyer be taken to a mental asylum. The lawyers had boycotted his court for a month that time also.
