“This is for the first time that a housing society solely meant for women is going to come up in the country. The idea struck me in 2001 and after getting all the approvals from Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA), we started the construction of flats on World’s Women Day,” the Parvati Durga Cooperative Group Housing Society president Archana Sanghi told IANS.

“This is a society for the women, of the women and by the women. Even the design of the flats is made keeping in mind the requirements of women.”

There would be 48 flats, each of 2,400 square feet area, in the housing society here, about 10 km from Chandigarh. All the flats will be registered in the names of women only.

Sanghi said the housing society plans to build another complex for women in Haryana, for which the process of getting approvals from HUDA is underway.

Minister of state for finance Pawan Kumar Bansal inaugurated the construction work of flats Sunday.

Owners of the flats include doctors, lecturers, engineers, social workers and journalists.

Explaining the design of the flats, chief architect of the society Satish Kumar said: “We have left open space right in between the society that will be converted into green belt. All the kitchens face towards this green belt so that mothers can keep an eye on their children while working in kitchens.”

“Moreover flats will be made earthquake resistant and each flat will be provided with its individual solar panel to save non-renewable natural resources,” he said.
