However, the police have not confirmed that Sharan Basavraj, 20, had raped the Australian tourist who was staying with her husband at a cottage in Gokarna in Uttara Kannada district, over 550 km from the state capital.

“Only after investigations are complete can we confirm whether rape had been committed,” Raman Gupta, the district superintendent of police, told IANS by phone.

The woman, Geev Lawrence James, and her husband Lawrence James have left the place after lodging the complaint, Gupta said.

Basavraj, a student of an engineering college in Bangalore, is now in judicial custody.

Gupta said the Australian couple had been staying at Gokarna for the last three weeks.

Gokarna is a favourite spot for many foreign tourists because of its two beaches and temples. The place attracts foreign tourists through the year and many stay for weeks as accommodation and food are inexpensive.
