A youth was killed and another critically injured in clashes between the security forces and the stone pelting mobs in Nowhatta area of old city on Friday.

As scores of mourners offered the fourth day prayers, authorities resorted to preventive measures to thwart fresh protests in four police station areas of Nowhatta, Rainawari, S.R. Gunj and Safa Kadal in old city.

Life in other parts of the city was, however, normal as traffic, banks, markets, government offices and educational institutions opened here Monday.

Thousands of devotees are going to the Hazratbal shrine in the city Monday to celebrate the birth anniversary of the Prophet of Islam.

Authorities have made elaborate arrangements to facilitate the movement of the devotees and fleets of buses and mini-buses are ferrying the devotees to the shrine.

“All arrangements have been made for the smooth passage of the devotees to the Hazratbal shrine. Strict vigil is being maintained to ensure that miscreants do not disturb peace in the city,” a senior police officer said.
