Vienna : The IAEA chief here on Monday expressed hope that Iran-US talks would start in the next few weeks.
Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Mohamed ElBaradei made the remarks while addressing diplomats and politicians in Austria’s parliament.
He expressed hope that the new US administration would make progress in resolving the international standoff surrounding Iran’s peaceful nuclear program.
Underlining the need for holding direct negotiations between Tehran and Washington without any preconditions, ElBaradei said the uranium enrichment suspension has been a precondition for holding talks between the two sides in the past six years which was never materialized.
The UN nuclear official reiterated that settlement of Iran’s nuclear issue is in need of further cooperation with the agency.
He also underscored the need for paying due attention to the Mideast security structure.
ElBaradei stressed that any solution to Iran’s nuclear standoff should include Iran’s neighboring states.
He hoped that the settlement of the Islamic Republic’s nuclear issue would be put on a correct path in the current year.
