Agartala : Night curfew has been imposed along the borders with Bangladesh in Assam and Tripura besides stepping up security in view of the general elections, officials said here Saturday.
A home ministry official said vigil along the Bangladesh border has been tightened to check movement of militants and infiltration.
“Night curfew along one-km radius has been promulgated, besides banning fishing during night and movement of non-government vehicles, rickshaws and hand carts,” the official told IANS, speaking on condition of anonymity.
District authorities in the two states also banned carrying of any kind of weapons, including bamboo sticks, along the border areas for the next two months.
“Security was further intensified with intelligence reports that some militants sheltered in Bangladesh might enter India through southern Assam or Tripura ahead of the Lok Sabha polls,” the home ministry official said.
The senior home ministry official was visiting the northeastern states to chalk out security strategies for the polls.
“As many rivers divide the two countries, militants, infiltrators and smugglers use boats to sneak into the Indian territory,” Border Security Force (BSF) spokesman A.K. Singh said.
