Lucknow : A policeman was caught using a stolen motorcycle in the premises of a district court of Uttar Pradesh, officials said Tuesday.
Sub Inspector Shyam Sunder Sharma was caught Monday after he parked the motorcycle, stolen from a lawyer, outside the chief judicial magistrate’s court at Gorakhpur, 260 km from here.
“The cop parked the vehicle at the same place from where it was stolen a couple of months ago. I along with some other lawyers stood there waiting for him to return,” lawyer and owner of the motorcycle Virendra Gaur said.
“When Sharma returned and was preparing to leave, we approached him and inquired about the vehicle. Initially he insisted that the bike belonged to him but later said that the bike was lodged in the unclaimed register of the police station and as he did not have a vehicle to come to court he used it.”
“Sharma said if he had any wrong intentions, he could have easily changed the registration number, fuel tank and other accessories,” Gaur said.
After the theft, a case had been lodged at the Gorakhpur Cantonment police station. After Monday’s incident, Sharma’s name was included in the case records.
“Sharma has been suspended and his name has been included in the FIR (first information report) lodged by Gaur when his motorcycle was stolen,” inspector Sarang Dhar Dwivedi of the Cantonment police station told IANS on phone.
