Adam Pyotr Mancic, 41, was arrested Saturday from the coastal resort village of Morjim. He had fled Europe after having allegedly murdered German businessman Freidhelm Lodenkaamp in Berlin-Mitte on Nov 3 for a payment of 25,000 euros ($32,250).

“The German police have informed us that Mancic shot Lodenkaamp thrice with expertly placed shots using a 9 mm Bertha pistol when the victim was walking his dog on the evening of Nov 3. Two shots were aimed at the head and one in the chest. Mancic had been paid for the murder by Lodenkaamp’s business rival,” a Crime Branch official told IANS on condition of anonymity.

The Interpol issued a red corner notice for Mancic last November after the Tiergarten magistrate in Berlin issued an arrest warrant in his name.

Mancic entered Goa Nov 23 and moved from one coastal village to another in the northern part of the state, which sees a steady inflow of foreign tourists annually.

Police officials said they are intrigued by one visit Mancic made to Attari in Punjab, close to the India-Pakistan border.

According to the officials, Mancic has denied committing the murder.

“All Mancic is admitting to is that he was a sergeant in the Polish army. Apart from that, he has not told us anything. He insists on speaking in the presence of a Polish embassy official,” the Crime Branch official said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Chandrakant Salgaokar told IANS that the extradition procedure would be completed within 60 days as stipulated by the Extradition Act 1962.

“We have completed all formalities. It is up to the German police and the Interpol officials to take charge of the accused,” he said.
