Stronger Pakistani PM in India’s interest: Brajesh Mishra

By IANS,

New Delhi : Amid shifting power equations in Pakistan, former national security adviser Brajesh Mishra said President Asif Zardari could not deliver on promises despite being “warm” towards India, adding a stronger Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani would be a better bet for New Delhi to deal with Islamabad.

“He (Zardari) was always warm to India … But so far action is concerned, it never happened,” Mishra said in an interview to CNBC’s “India Tonight” programme.

Mishra said Zardari “could never deliver (on promises) (or) he was not allowed to deliver… any of the two.”

“He did make promises which he did not fulfil.”

On the Pakistan prime minister emerging as a stronger force in the process, Mishra said “protocol-wise, if Gilani enjoys more power, then it will be easier for India to handle things with the neighbouring country”.

Analysts in Islamabad say the powers to appoint the service chiefs and the chief justice and to dismiss the federal and provincial governments would be taken away from the presidency and restored to the prime minister’s office.

President Zardari Monday capitulated on the lawyers’ demand for reinstating the sacked Supreme Court and high court judges after opposition leader Nawaz Sharif launched a mass campaign.

After giving in to Sharif, questions are being raised about the future of Zardari as president.
