According to the state’s additional chief electoral officer Dilip Acherjee, the Election Commission has barred use of grounds of all educational institutions for poll meetings.

However, the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) led Left Front and the main opposition Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other parties, in a meeting with election officials late Wednesday, requested withdrawing of the ban as there were hardly any other venues for holding election meetings.

“Our mass campaign would badly suffer if we are not allowed to hold election rallies in such grounds,” said CPI-M’s Tripura state secretary Bijan Dhar, adding the meetings can be held in the grounds during holidays or after school or college hours without disturbing regular classes.

Acherjee told journalists that they will discuss the matter with the Election Commission.
