Plea to scrap DMK poll symbol dismissed

By IANS,

New Delhi : The Supreme Court Monday dismissed a lawsuit seeking scrapping of the DMK “Rising Sun” symbol after it was alleged that the sun represented a Hindu god and so could not be an election symbol.

A bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and judge P. Sathasivam said it did not find any illegality in the allotment of the election symbol to the DMK.

The Youthmen Hindu Association filed a suit, contending that people worship the Sun god and have built sun temples in different parts of the country.

The petitioner contended that ancient Hindu scriptures mention the Sun god and allotting the “Rising Sun” as the DMK poll symbol would amount to the party seeking votes in the name of religion.

The apex court rejected the argument, as the Election Commission had done earlier.
