New Delhi : The Supreme Court Thursday gave the Meghalaya speaker a free hand to conduct proceedings under the anti-defection law and disqualify five members of the Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA) who had deserted the ruling combine and joined the Congress.
A bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan revoked a Gauhati High Court order that prevented Speaker Bindo M. Lanong from disqualifying the legislators.
The MPA government narrowly won the trust vote in the 60-member assembly March 17. The MPA got 28 votes, including the speaker’s vote, while 27 legislators supported the Congress.
Five legislators were not allowed to vote after the speaker placed them under interim suspension for withdrawing support to the MPA.
