Lahore : Salman Taseer, the governor of Pakistan’s Punjab province, Tuesday announced compensation of Rs.20 lakh each for the families of the eight policemen killed in the terror attack on the Manawan training academy near here, even as 50 people have been arrested for their suspected role in the assault.
This apart, the salary and other benefits would be paid till the time they would have otherwise retired, he said after attending the funeral prayers of the slain policemen.
He said that though the terrorists who attacked the complex were highly trained, the policemen had fought them with bravery and courage, The News reported.
Speaking on the occasion, Punjab’s Inspector General of Police Khalid Farooq said 50 suspects had been arrested for the Manawan attack and were being interrogated.
According to him, fighting terrorists was not the job of the police but despite this, they had taken on the attackers.
“It is easier to criticize. If any lapse has been found, I own responsibility for that,” Farooq maintained.
Heavily-armed terrorists stormed into the Manawan police academy, just 12 km from the Indian border, and held some 800 trainees hostage for more than eight hours Monday before Pakistani security forces recaptured the complex.
Eight terrorists were killed and three were captured alive. Apart from the eight policemen, two civilians also died in the assault.
