Islamabad : More than 2,000 people have fled their homes in Buner district of Pakistan’s troubled North West Frontier Province as the military operation against the Taliban militants hots up in the area, a media report said Sunday.
Hundreds of displaced and homeless people have arrived in the Shangla area to take refuge in schools and government buildings as the military operation against Taliban militants intensified in Buner, the News reported.
The local residents in Shangla have formed different groups to help the displaced people, who were mostly women and children.
In Puran locality, people have made arrangements at primary and high schools to accommodate the homeless.
The police said they were helping the displaced people with whatever resources they have.
Security forces have baricaded the area for protection.
An official said an indefinite curfew has been imposed in the area Sunday.
The Pakistani Army had launched a major offensive against Taliban militants in Buner district Tuesday. Some 500 militants are still hiding in the area, media reports said.
Eighty Taliban militants and three security personnel have been killed in the operation so far, Army Commander Brigadier Fayyaz said.
He said the neighbouring Daggar area has been cleared of the militants.
The militants entered the district last month from the restive Swat valley and had set up their own checkpoints to patrol the area.
The militants want to enforce the Sharia (Islamic law) in the area, media reports said.
