Kolkata : West Bengal’s ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Wednesday alleged that activists of the opposition Trinamool Congress were threatening villagers in Tamluk constituency, within which Nandigram comes, ahead of the polls Thursday.
“Trinamool Congress activists are constantly terrorising villagers so that they won’t vote for the Left Front-nominated candidate in tomorrow’s polls. We don’t know what will happen tomorrow if such a situation continues,” East Minapore district CPI-M leader Ashok Guria told IANS.
“If the polling would be conducted in a fair and peaceful manner, we’re sure to win this Tamluk seat, which comprises the small rural pocket of Nandigram,” Guria said.
Nandigram, which became synonymous with political violence after protests over land being acquired for a chemical hub, flared up as a battle turf for the two parties.
The Trinamool Congress, on its part, said it was confident that Tamluk will see high voter turnout.
“People are very enthusiastic to vote for their candidate this time. At least 40,000 people, who are voters of Tamluk but had migrated to different states because of their profession, have come to their base. They all will cast their votes tomorrow,” said Abu Taher, a Trinamool Congress leader in Nangigram.
“We’re expecting around 90 percent turnout in tomorrow’s polling,” he added.
