Raipur: Maoist militants murdered a police officer in full public view Thursday in Chhattisgarh’s trouble-torn southern Bastar region, officials said.
Insurgents clad in civil clothes hit the officer, Abdul Wahid Khan, with a heavy stick from behind at a weekly market at Pharsgaon village in Narayanpur district and then slit his throat, police said.
“Khan went to weekly market probably for tea or some snacks in civil clothes and the insurgents numbering 3-4, who were waiting for him, hit him from behind and then slit his throat and then walked away,” Amresh Mishra, district superintendent of police, told IANS.
Khan, 45, who headed the Pharasgaon police station some 20 km from district headquarters Narayanpur town, died on the spot.
The officer had been receiving death threats from insurgents for a long time. His murder was witnessed by dozens of local people but no one dared to intervene.
Police officials said that a camp of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is based close to the attack site besides the Pharasgaon police station, but police officials came to know about the murder at least an hour later.
