“In pursuance of Rule 4 of Order II of the Supreme Court Rules, 1966 (as amended), the honourable chief justice of India has directed that the Supreme Court will be closed for the annual summer vacations from Monday, May 18 to Sunday, July 5 (both days inclusive) and will reopen on July 6,” said an apex court notification.

During the annual summer vacation, the court will continue to work but at less capacity. During this period, it will have only three benches, comprising two judges each, working.

The Supreme Court has been battling to reduce the backlog of cases – the total number of cases pending in the court was 50,163 at the end of March 2009, according to the Department of Justice.
