New Delhi : The Supreme Court Monday decided to hear a lawsuit by the Uttar Pradesh government challenging a court order asking it to segregate the cases of genuine and spurious candidates recruited as police constables.
A vacation bench of Justice Markandey Katju and Justice Deepak Verma, while admitting the state government’s appeal against the Allahabad High Court ruling, issued notices to a group of recruits on whose lawsuit the high court had asked the state to differentiate the cases of the genuine candidates from the illegal ones.
A division bench of the high court on March 4 ordered the state that instead of dismissing all the 20,000-odd recruits from the service, it should differentiate between the genuine cases from those who secured the job through illegal means.
A single-judge bench of the high court in December 2008 had scrapped the state government’s order to dismiss all the recruits in the police constabulary on the grounds that they had been recruited in an illegal and irregular manner during in 2004-06 when Mulayam Singh Yadav was chief minister.
The apex court decided to hear the matter soon after its ongoing summer vacation.
