Delhi to provide health, educational facilities for labourers

New Delhi: The Delhi government Wednesday announced that it will come out with a comprehensive plan to provide health and education facilities to families of labourers engaged in construction activities in the national capital.

“It has been decided that departments of health and education would provide medical care and education facilities to labourers for which the department of labour will release funds from Delhi Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Fund,” said an official statement.

The decision was taken by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in a review meeting of the labour department that was attended by state Labour Minister Mangat Ram Singhal.

“An amount of Rs.100 per month as scholarship is being paid to the wards of construction labourers studying in middle classes and Rs.250 per month to the wards studying in higher classes,” the statement added.

Dikshit also asked the health department to make available mobile dispensaries and education department to depute ‘chalta phirta’ (mobile) schools for family members of construction labourers.

“It was decided to provide these facilities in next two months when the schools re-open,” the statement further said.
