Chennai: In her first comment after the decimation of the Tamil Tigers, AIADMK leader J. Jayalalitha Thursday asked Sri Lanka to address “all the genuine grievances” of the Tamil community.
“The (Mahinda) Rajapakse government should realise… (that) the decimation of the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) or the killings of its leaders will not wipe away the injustice meted out to (the Tamil) community in Sri Lanka,” the former Tamil Nadu chief minister said.
“(It) should address all the genuine grievances of the oppressed Tamil community and come out with necessary constitutional changes to ensure equal rights to all citizens in Sri Lanka. (Else), history will repeat itself and more unrest and wanton killings will follow,” she warned.
“The end of … the bitter battle does not signify victory for anyone. (While) no one has reasons to gloat over it, the mutual misgivings should be settled through genuine transparent action,” she said.
Jayalalitha also urged the Indian government to provide a “massive re-building and rehabilitation” package to Sri Lanka to the tune of Rs.10,000 crores.
Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Jayalalitha stunned everyone by declaring that she would have the Indian Army sent to Sri Lanka to create an independent Tamil Eelam state.
Her party won 12 of the 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu.
Meanwhile, pro-LTTE activists flung a petrol bomb at a government bus in Sivaganga district, 350 km south of here, injuring three people seriously, police sources here said.
The attackers shouted slogans against the Indian and Lankan governments over the killing of LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran.
