New Delhi : Five men have been arrested for allegedly cheating people by posing as officials of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), police said Thursday.
Azam Ali (47), Anwar Hussain (43), Ayub Ali (37), Javed Ali (30) and Sabir Ali (50) were arrested Wednesday for cheating city-based businessman Prakash Prajapat of Rs.100,000 in Karol Bagh area of central Delhi.
Prajapat, who is a toys and mobile accessories retailer, told police that he was intercepted by five men when he was going to purchase goods and carrying Rs. 100,000 with him for the purpose.
“He further said that near Padam Singh Marg crossing, five men wearing commando caps and representing themselves as CBI officers stopped him for checking. One of them said he was an assistant commissioner of police and took his bag to search,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (central Delhi) Jaspal Singh.
“They handed him the bag back and left saying that nothing suspicious was found in it. But when Prajapat checked, the money was missing,” he added.
Four of the five are from Bhopal while one belongs to Maharashtra. “They often used to come to Delhi for committing such crimes,” Singh said.
