Lieutenant Colonel J.S. Brar, spokesman of the army’s 15th corps, said: “Terrorists made yet another attempt at infiltration into the Valley in the Keran sector of the LOC yesterday (Monday).

“When they were challenged by our troops, they started firing, resulting in an encounter at the end of which one terrorist was killed and after much struggle another was arrested,” he said.

The arrested guerrilla has been identified as Tanvir Ahmad, 23, a Pakistan resident who was trained for three months in a camp in Muzaffarabad and later shifted close to the LoC, the spokesman said.

“We are now handing him over to the police for interrogation,” Brar said.

He added that the militants were making accelerated efforts to sneak into the Valley before the infiltration routes become inaccessible due to heavy snowfall in the winter months.

“There is snow in these areas, but not enough to deter infiltration attempts,” Brar said.

He also disclosed that last year seven infiltrating guerrillas had been killed in October-November. In the corresponding period this year, nine militants have been killed while attempting to cross the LoC, Brar said.

“Yes, to that extent there is a marginal increase in infiltration this year, but we are ready for that,” he added.
