Chennai : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) here Tuesday arrested on charges of corruption 10 customs officials, among them two women, posted at Chennai airport cargo division, officials said.
A CBI court sent the arrested officials to custody till Dec 8.
Acting on complaints, five CBI teams raided the cargo complex of the Chennai airport and found huge irregularities in charging customs duties on goods imported.
The CBI team which raided the houses of customs officials seized two kilos of gold from one official and Rs.700,000 and Rs.900,000 cash from the house to two others arrested.
According to CBI officials, the customs authorities permitted importers to declare lower sum than the actual value so that lower duty could be paid.
