India’s swine flu toll touches 560, over 17,000 affected

New Delhi : Two swine flu deaths were reported in India Wednesday, taking the toll due to the Influenza A (H1N1) virus to 560, health authorities said here.

At least 234 new cases were reported in the country, taking the total number affected to 17,196.

One death was reported from Rajasthan and Orissa each. With this, the toll in Rajasthan has touched 38, while three people have succumbed to the contagious virus in Orissa so far.

“Till date, samples from 83,989 people have been tested for Influenza A (H1N1) in government laboratories and a few private laboratories across the country and 16,962 of them have been found (to be) positive,” said a statement issued here.

Of the 234 new cases, 68 were from the national capital. This has taken the number of people affected with the flu in Delhi to 4,237 – the highest in the country now.

On Wednesday, 14 new cases were reported in Maharashtra, taking the total number of people affected with the virus to 3,919 – the second highest in the country.

New cases were also reported from Rajasthan (42), Haryana (40), Uttar Pradesh (20), Karnataka (13) and Kerala (12).
