Two killed in blast near Madurai

Chennai : At least two people were killed and four injured when an explosion rocked the Cholavanthan railway station near Madurai Tuesday evening, police said, adding that the nature of the blast was under investigation.

The explosion occured just as the Myladuthurai-Tirunellvelli passenger train was entering the station at about 6 p.m., the Madurai police said.

The blast was so severe that the roof of the platform was also damaged as passengers ran for cover.

Police officials said it was not clear if the explosion was that of a country-made bomb or a consignment of fire-crackers. No group has claimed responsibility.

A medical team was rushed to the railway station.

Police teams and railway officials, along with a medical team, rushed to Cholavanthan, about 25 km from Madurai.

The injured have been rushed to the Government Hospital in Madurai, about 450 km from here.
