Toronto : Canada Thursday condemned the suicide attack at the Indian embassy in Kabul.
Seventeen people were killed and nearly 80 injured when a suicide bomber blew up his explosive-laden vehicle near the embassy Thursday morning. It is the second suicide attack in 15 months at the Indian mission in Kabul.
In a statement, Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon said, “Canada strongly condemns the violent attack that occurred today near the embassy of India in Kabul and claimed the lives of several Afghan civilians and injured many others.”
He said,”On behalf of all Canadians, I would like to express our deepest sympathies to those who were injured and offer our sincere condolences to the friends and families of those who were killed in today’s attack. “This attack once again demonstrates that the insurgents in Afghanistan have no regard for the lives of Afghans and are determined to keep Afghanistan from emerging as a safe, secure and peaceful society.”
Canada has more than 2,500 troops in Afghanistan as part of the NATO-led mission to fight the Taliban and Al Qaeda. It has already lost more than 130 of its men. The government has said Canada will pull out of Afghanistan by December 2011.
“Canada’s continuing objective is to help Afghans build a stable and secure country based on the fundamental values of democracy, human rights and the rule of law,” the foreign minister said.
