Jamia teachers mourn rights activist Balagopal’s death

New Delhi : The Jamia Teachers Solidarity Association (JTSA) Friday mourned the death of eminent human rights activist and lawyer K. Balagopal who died following cardiac arrest in Hyderabad.

“Jamia Teachers Solidarity Association mourns the untimely death of India’s leading and one of the most firm defenders of civil liberties, K. Balagopal,” JTSA said in a message issued here.

JTSA also said that Balagopal’s memory and legacy of brave struggle will continue to inspire them to speak against injustice.

A mathematics professor-turned-rights activist, Balagopal was opposed to violence blamed both on the state and Maoists. He played a leading role in opposing fake killings of Maoists by police.

Balagopal, 57, died in a hospital Thursday night. He is survived by his wife and son.
