Kolkata: The Maoists are getting foreign funds through some non-governmental organisations, a top official of the West Bengal Police claimed here Friday.
“A portion of foreign funds routed through some NGOs for the welfare of tribals is going to the Moists,” state Director General of Police Bhupinder Singh told mediapersons.
Bhupinder said the Maoists had links with the Bhoomi Uchched Pratirodh Committee (Anti Land Acquisition Committee) which spearheaded the movement against the state government’s proposed chemical hub project. Several opposition parties, including Trinamool Congress and the Congress were part of the BUPC.
Asked about the recent killing of Nandigram Trinamool Congress leader and Sonachura gram panchayat chief Nishikanta Mandal, he said: “It was a fall-out of an unholy nexus.”
When asked whether he was implying that the Trianmool Congress was in collusion with the leftwing extremists, Bhupinder said: “I won’t name anybody. They are not our target. The Maoists are our target.
“But those who play with fire by having affinity or links with the Maoists, will have to pay the price,” he added.
Bhupinder also said the Maoists had links with a political party in the West Midnapore belt of Lalgarh, but did not disclose any name.
The West Bengal government has deployed a large joint force of central paramilitary troopers and state police personnel to flush out Maoists from Lalgarh, where the left wing ultras had virtually established a free zone by torching police camps and driving out the civil administration and the ruling communists.
Maoists are active in areas under 21 police stations in the state’s three western districts – West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia.
