New Delhi : The Bharat Krishak Samaj (BKS), an association of farmers, Thursday petitioned Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on issuing a commemorative stamp in honour of Nobel laureate Norman Borlaug, who steered India’s Green Revolution in the 1960s that ensured the country’s food security.

Borlaug, who played a major role in developing disease-resistant wheat to fight famine in poor countries, died at the age of 95 in Texas last month.

“A stamp in memory of Dr. Borlaug will be a token of appreciation by the people and farmers of India towards a man who truly helped our country”, BKS president Ram Niwas Mirdha, a former central minister, said in a statement.

BKS chairman Ajay Jakhar said a letter on this had been written to the prime minister and the communications minister.

“BKS hopes that the government of India will consider its urging, and the Indian postal department would issue the stamp at the earliest. We hope the government will act very soon on our request.

“The world of today faces unprecedented dangers in food security and climate change. This honour for Dr. Borlaug will inspire humanity to overcome these challenges with character and science,” Jakhar added.
