“A four-member committee, under the chairmanship of Additional Deputy Commissioner Pushpender Chouhan, has been formed. The other members include two deputy labour commissioners and general manager of district industries centre,” said the state spokesperson here Monday evening.

This decision was taken at a high-level meeting of senior officers of the labour department with the Gurgaon deputy commissioner here Monday.

“The committee would invite representatives of factory management and labour union for a dialogue. The committee members would try to resolve the dispute amicably by initiating talks between the disputing parties,” added the spokesperson.

RICO has been seeing labour unrest for the past one month. While the workers want to form a union, the management is not heeding their demand saying the workers have had pay hikes and the unit is continuously seeing low productivity.

Late Sunday, a clash broke out in the factory between workers who were on strike and those who wanted to get back to work. The situation soon spun out of control with violence and arson that left a worker dead and several others injured.

The labour department has termed the strike as illegal but the workers did not come to work Monday.

The situation at the RICO factory continued to be tense Monday.

While a case of murder has been registered by Gurgaon police, around 200 striking workers at RICO sat outside the factory gate in protest Monday.

The management, they claimed, was responsible for triggering the violence Sunday evening.

Gurgaon Police Commissioner S.S. Deswal told IANS: “The workers’ strike is illegal and we have given them repeated warnings to leave the place. We have adequate police presence to handle the situation.”

“One factory worker has been killed and nearly six to seven have been injured,” he added.

Around 3,500 workers are on strike at the factory.
