The statement comes after incumbent Afghan President Hamid Karzai accepted Tuesday to hold a second round of presidential elections on 7 November .

An UN investigation found evidence of vote-rigging on a massive scale in the first round August elections.

” The European Union commends the Electoral Complaints Commission and the Independent Election Commission for their work in identifying, investigating and ruling on the fraud and irregularities during the elections, and notes with satisfaction that the safeguards of the electoral system have worked,” noted an EU statement.

The 27-member EU said it will monitor the progress, and continue to support improvements, of the electoral system in Afghanistan.
