In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee said: “The National Disaster Management Authority has been suitably advised to proceed further in the matter.”

The letter went on to add: “However, in view of the complexity involved in a decentralised project of this magnitude as well as the resource position available in the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund, it would be advisable if the project is completed in a phased manner.”

Banerjee said that in the first phase, 200 houses will be constructed in Bengal.

Cyclone Aila hit West Bengal and Bangladesh in May, killing 24 people and affecting 10,000 families.
