The state government and the Education department had said earlier that the money would be distributed through banks. Students had also created bank accounts for the purpose. Since banks did not permit the creation of zero-balance accounts, many students had to create accounts by spending amounts worth Rs 250 to Rs 1000. But now the government and the education department have decided to distribute the scholarships through school principals.

The list of deserving students had reached the schools last February. The school principals distributed the scholarships yesterday in the presence of parents. About 47,000 students received scholarships worth Rs 1000. About seven lakh students from poor Muslim and Christian families had applied for the scholarship in Kerala.
