New Delhi : India Tuesday made a fresh pitch for UN reforms, seeking to revive its bid for a permanent seat in the Security Council, and underlined that a new system of global governance must also have “in-built flexibility” to adapt to the evolving world order.
Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur presented India’s perspective on New global governance for the 21st Century’ at the Bled Strategic Forum at the lakeside resort of Bled in Slovenia.
She underlined that working to make the UN Security Council more representative of developing countries in both categories of membership, permanent and non-permanent, would significantly enhance the effectiveness of the world body, an external affairs ministry statement said here Tuesday.
The prime minister of Macedonia, the speaker of the Czech Republic’s parliament, the deputy prime minister of Luxembourg and the foreign minister of Turkey also participated in the forum, which was inaugurated by Slovenia’s President Danilo Tuerk.
Preneet Kaur also said that the successful completion of the Doha Round of multilateral trade negotiations should reflect the interests of the developing countries. India will host an informal meeting of trade ministers later this week to energise the negotiations.
Ahead of the Copenhagen conference on climate change in December that is expected to find a successor to the Kyoto Protocol, the minister stressed that “equity should be a key consideration while the world seeks to lay down a long term vision and a plan of action for the period beyond 2012.”
She reiterated New Delhi’s position of common but differentiated responsibility and respective capabilities and spoke about a slew of steps taken by India to minimise carbon dependence while delivering on development.
