Kiev : Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko will arrive in Poland on Monday on a two-day visit, for talks with the Polish leader and to unveil a memorial to victims of a Stalin-era famine.
The Ukrainian presidential administration said Yushchenko will hold one-on-one talks with his counterpart, Lech Kaczynski, in the presidential palace in Warsaw on Monday. The leaders plan to sign several bilateral documents.
After laying flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Ukrainian leader will take part in the unveiling of a memorial in the Wolski Roman Catholic Cemetery to victims of the 1932-1933 Holodomor famine.
The famine remains a contentious issue in Ukraine’s relations with Russia. Kiev’s attempts to have Holodomor internationally recognized as an act of genocide have been criticized by Moscow, which says the mass starvation caused by Stalin’s collectivization program was a tragedy for the whole of the Soviet Union, and did not target Ukrainians specifically.
Yushchenko also plans to meet with Prime Minister Donald Tusk and the speakers of both houses of Poland’s parliament.
