“My daughter was fasting for Ramazan. She will never get to break her fast now,” Shamshari said before she fainted.

She was not the only one grieving. Many worried parents and relatives gathered at the Government Senior Secondary School in northeast Delhi after the news broke that a stampede in the water-logged school had turned into a tragedy.

However, a large number of policemen were guarding the school premises after the tragedy and the parents were not allowed inside.

Shamshari regained consciousness and a look at the site of stampede brought her to the world.

“Afroz didn’t even have a sehri (pre-dawn food) before starting fast. Who will feed her?” she cried.

“This is the biggest tragedy we have faced,” said her husband, himself in tears while he was trying to console her.

Some parents were wailing and some worried and confused about the whereabouts of their children.

“I have been looking for my son. But so far there has been no information,” said a man. He was told the boy had been taken to the Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital.

“They are not allowing us inside nor are they telling us about our children,” a woman cried.

As feared, angry parents threw stones at the policemen and blocked traffic on the road but the situation was brought under control quickly.
