Meira Kumar to attend Commonwealth parliamentary conference

New Delhi : An Indian parliamentary delegation led by Speaker Meira Kumar will leave Monday to attend the 55th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPA) in Tanzania Sep 29-Oct 5.

“The theme of this conference is ‘The Commonwealth and the CPA; Meeting Future Global Challenges’,” Meira Kumar said Saturday.

Meira Kumar will also attend the executive committee meeting and will be the lead speaker at the workshop on ‘The Role of Parliament in shaping the Information Society’.

The conference will officially open Oct 2, the date which is observed as the International Day of Non-Violence.

“There will be one plenary session and eight workshops,” the speaker said.

The Lok Sabha speaker is the president of CPA India Region. India had hosted the CPA Conference in 1957, 1975, 1991 and 2007.

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) was founded in 1911 and it aims to promote parliamentary democracy by enhancing knowledge and understanding of democratic governance. It has 53 member countries.
